MAXWELL J. PETERSEN

Mr. Petersen joined the Firm in January 1997. Prior to joining, he was a partner in the Chicago office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. Mr. Petersen specializes in chemical and polymer-related areas of intellectual property law including complex patent opinions, prosecution, litigation, interferences and licensing, and represents various local and national clients.

Mr. Petersen has provided hundreds of patent infringement and/or validity opinions, has issued hundreds of patents, and has participated in several interferences. He has served as counsel in several patent infringement cases. His legal practice has encompassed various technical areas, including  nonwoven fabrics and laminates, absorbent articles, extruded plastic films, polymer science, candle wax, refractories, oil and petrochemical processes, food science, particleboard manufacture, and wastewater treatment. 

Mr. Petersen earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1980, where he received a BASF-Wyandotte award for excellence in engineering design. While working full time as a polymer research engineer, Mr. Petersen earned his J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago in 1987, and was a second place national winner in the 1986 Giles S. Rich Moot Court Competition. Mr. Petersen is licensed in Illinois, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and the Northwest Suburban Bar Association.
