Mr. Petersen
joined the Firm as a shareholder in 1997 and has over 20 years
of experience in patent and trademark litigation, complex
right-to-practice opinions, patent prosecution, interferences
and licensing. Mr.
Petersen has a technical background in chemical engineering.
Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Petersen was a shareholder
in the Chicago office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione.

Mr.
Petersen prepared and issued more than 100 detailed right-to-practice
opinions covering U.S. patents and products of interest, mostly
in the chemical, polymer and mechanical fields of art. Mr.
Petersen prepared and prosecuted, and/or supervised the preparation
and prosecution of over 500 issued U.S. patents, mostly in
the chemical, polymer, mechanical and medical fields. Mr.
Petersen prepared and prosecuted, and/or supervised the preparation
and prosecution of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office appeals,
reexaminations, reissue applications, and interferences.
Mr. Petersen has also assisted clients in licensing, negotiation,
and intellectual property counseling, and has authored articles
directed to litigation strategies and right-to-practice opinions.
Mr. Petersen's legal practice has encompassed a wide variety
of technical fields including pressure-sensitive adhesive
labels, nonwoven fabrics and laminates, absorbent articles,
plastic films and containers, polymer science, candle wax,
refractories, oil and petrochemical processes, food science,
particleboard manufacture, and wastewater treatment.
Mr.
Petersen earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Iowa
State University, where he received a BASF-Wyandotte award
for excellence in engineering design. While working full time
as a polymer research engineer, Mr. Petersen earned his J.D.
from Loyola University of Chicago, and was a second place
national winner in the 1986 Giles S. Rich Moot Court Competition.
Mr. Petersen is licensed in Illinois, and is registered to
practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is
a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association,
the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the
Federal Circuit Bar Association, and the Northwest Suburban
Bar Association.
